Among this year’s graduating seniors, we would like to recognize one of our mentees for his quiet strength, unwavering dedication, and humble leadership - Ben.

From the moment he joined our program, Ben demonstrated a deep commitment to personal growth and integrity. He approaches every opportunity as a chance to learn, always giving his best effort. His mentors speak highly of his character, emphasizing his maturity, humility, and the respect he consistently shows to others.

L.A.U.N.C.H. for Life founder and mentor David Crisafi, says one of the things he noticed about Ben immediately was his kind soul. “Ben leads with empathy, and that is a strong and unique quality. Ben has always gone out of his way to contribute to the value discussions and keep an open mind at events. Ben’s ability to have a strong presence without a loud voice will serve him well, no matter what he decides to do. I can’t wait to see what Ben has in store after graduation.”

One of Ben’s most remarkable contributions to L.A.U.N.C.H. for Life was his leadership in our “Hike to Honor Veterans.” Selected by his mentors to lead this meaningful event, Ben embraced the responsibility with focus and dedication. “Ben is a fine young man of great character, always giving his best with any opportunity to learn. He is quiet, humble, and always polite with a maturity beyond his years. He will undoubtedly give 100% effort to whatever path he chooses to follow and will be successful because of it.” Says Graduate Program Lead Marc Gaudette.

L.A.U.N.C.H. president Ken Jordan echoed these sentiments, noting that “Ben is a remarkable young man. He embraces every opportunity to learn and grow. He led our Veterans Day hike with quiet strength and maturity. Ben’s humility and commitment are admirable, and I have no doubt he’ll carry these qualities into a bright and successful future.”

As we commemorate graduating seniors at L.A.U.N.C.H. for Life, we are thrilled to celebrate Kamaree Jones. Kamaree’s journey through L.A.U.N.C.H. has been one of remarkable growth, resilience, and leadership and he has left a positive mark on his peers and mentors at L.A.U.N.C.H.

I was enormously proud of Brandon’s passionate and thoughtful response when we had a speaker share the importance of teen driver safety. It demonstrated great empathy and character. Logan’s journey through L.A.U.N.C.H. has been inspiring. His quiet confidence, intellectual curiosity, and selfless support of peers have made a lasting impact. Graduate Program Lead Marc Gaudette reflects on his experience working with Logan, stating, “Logan possesses a quiet confidence and fearlessness combined with great strength of character. He has always been highly engaged in our events, demonstrating wonderful intellectual curiosity and always contributing meaningful input. Most notably, Logan’s willingness to selflessly assist peers in need of support has been admirable.” While Brian Tannenbaum highlights his "positive and engaging disposition and his ability to always add valuable insights to the group."

For Logan’s mother, Rebecca Mannion, L.A.U.N.C.H. has been a transformative space. "It’s not just fun but a place for valuable life lessons and character development," she shares, “I am so grateful Logan could be a part of such a valuable program”.

What does being a mentor for LAUNCH mean to you?

It’s such a great opportunity across many dimensions. First, to build lasting relationships. Second, to contribute to the growth of our mentees. And third, to contribute to my growth as a person. Ultimately it is about making a difference.

What part of your role do you find most fulfilling?

It’s those moments that matter, two come to mind. First, building strong relationships with my fellow mentors and volunteers. And secondly, those moments during an event where you are able to really connect and get to know mentees.

How long have you been with LAUNCH?

Since August 2023.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

Recently left Capital One after thirty years to focus more on family, myself and volunteering. In addition to LAUNCH I am volunteering with our local YMCA as part of their Learn to Swim program. My wife Kristen and I have been married for 23 years and love the outdoors. We have two kids, Zack (age 20) and Zoe (age 18).

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

In five years I hope mentees will look back at their time with LAUNCH and say; “I met great people, many of whom I am still connected with today”, “I had a lot of fun!”, and “It made a difference in helping me become the person I am today”.

What does being a mentor for LAUNCH mean to you?

It means consistently being there for boys and young men who need someone to listen and be present with them. I think it is really that simple.

What part of your role do you find most fulfilling?

Getting to know the boys and watching them get comfortable with each other and the mentors. I believe that impact for this type of thing is grounded in trust and trust is grounded in relationships, so getting to know the boys and watching that lead to impact over time is the most fulfilling thing.

How long have you been with LAUNCH?

I have been involved with the organization since the spring of 2023.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

When not mentoring for LAUNCH I am usually doing one of the following: enjoying time with my wife Emily and 4 children (Nick 14, Ben 13, Alex 11, Caroline 7), staying physically active - running & strength training, building new businesses and products at Capital One, reading about science and history, and enjoying the wonderful food and drink we are fortunate enough to have in the Richmond area.

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

I hope the mentees find an environment that feels a bit like an extended family. A group they can trust and rely on to be there for them.

What does being a mentor for LAUNCH mean to you?

Being a mentor for LAUNCH means far more than just presently giving my time; it's investing in today, tomorrow, and the years to come. LAUNCH empowers me to be the guide I wish I had growing up. Being present and active helps these young men navigate through life's challenges while developing essential ethics and skills. Each smile, breakthrough, or moment of trust is a testament to the impact of our collective efforts. It's not just about beaming these kids with dodge balls or sweeping the floor in laser tag; it's about building a foundation of character, trust, hope, and commitment. For me, being a mentor with LANUCH is an honor and a responsibility that tremendously enriches my life, as much as I hope it does theirs.

What part of your role do you find most fulfilling?

The most fulfilling part of being a mentor with LAUNCH is formulating quality relationships and seeing the impact that they hold, not only in the program, but, most importantly, in life.

How long have you been with LAUNCH?

I joined LAUNCH in 2023.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

Outside of LAUNCH I run an established buyer centric Mortgage Business with NFM Lending in Virginia and am in the process of getting my Texas Branch up and running. My industry is relationship-based, where the majority of my business comes from “shaking hands and kissing babies”. I absolutely LOVE talking about loans, Real Estate, Credit Scoring and market analysis. Outside of my business, I greatly enjoy trying new restaurants with my wife, Amanda. It’s common that Amanda and I frequent Belle Isle with our dogs; Grim and Reaper. On the more relaxing side, I absolutely LOVE playing video games.

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

I most hope that the LAUNCH mentees will close out this year having established lifelong memories and experiences that solidifies their foundation of core values learned through LAUNCH and that, if at anytime, they need someone to talk to or pull through, they know they have it.

What does being a mentor for LAUNCH mean to you?

Being a mentor for launch to me means making a difference and providing a positive impact on these young men’s lives. Showing up for them and being there when they might feel like they don’t have anyone to turn to or anyone who they can trust. Being someone who will listen and understand when they have something to talk about.

What part of your role do you find most fulfilling?

To me, the most fulfilling part of being a mentor is when a mentee really opens up and talks about something they really need to get off their chest.

How long have you been with LAUNCH?

I have been a mentor for launch for about 8 months now.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

In my free time I do all things basketball. I train and coach basketball as well as play in adult leagues and summer leagues when I can.

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

I hope the mentees gain confidence from this years program. The confidence to stand up for themselves and others. The confidence to put their minds to something and go do it. Not letting any minor inconvenience or adversity stop them from achieving their goals. The confidence to be who they are regardless of what others may think.

What does being a mentor for LAUNCH mean to you?

Being a mentor to me means simply just being present. Being an ear to listen, a shoulder to rest on, or a hand to help someone up. I simply try and be the things that I myself sometimes need from others.

What part of your role do you find most fulfilling?

The most fulfilling part to me is just seeing the boys smile and laugh. Seeing them just enjoy the moment.

How long have you been with LAUNCH?

My family and I attended a few LAUNCH events before becoming involved, but I've technically been a mentor since August of 2022.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

I am employed as a Soil Scientist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation service, In my free time I enjoy plucking at my guitar,

kayaking with my wife, and learning traditional archery.

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

I hope the mentees see that there are people that truly care about their future besides family and friends. People willing and wanting to help them become better young men. People they can turn to when times get tough. Basically, just that they're not alone. This world seems to be getting crazier by the minute. I hope they find this organization and the mentors involved as a source of stability and brotherhood.

What does being a mentor for LAUNCH mean to you?

Being a mentor for L.A.U.N.C.H. means I get the very fortunate opportunity to be a positive role model for these young men like the great men have done for me in my life. It means I can use the lessons I’ve learned over the years and impart the wisdom I’ve gained from those experiences onto these young men in a concentrated effort to build them into better men; better equipped to tackle the world and it’s many challenges. It means showing these young men with our presence and the examples we set that no matter how hard and brutal this world can be that there are people who care about them and their well being. My hope is that one day these young men will carry on the legacy of mentorship and this cycle of love and guidance will continue inspiring many generations to come.

What part of your role do you find most fulfilling?

The part of my role that I find most fulfilling is being a part of a well oiled team of awesome mentors who consistently show up in these kids lives to impart knowledge and discipline onto them while also facilitating fun events. No one could do this alone, but coming together as a unit to achieve a common goal is very fulfilling.

How long have you been with LAUNCH?

I’ve been a mentor with L.A.U.N.C.H. since August of 2022.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

I am passionate about film/video and music making as well and run a YouTube channel called Paddy Stax Productions. Being outside in nature whether it’s chilling at bell isle, going on a hike, or playing disc golf brings me much peace and happiness. I’m also constantly listening to music. Cornhole is another hobby of mine. I’m in a league with my dad and some neighbors and our team name is Hole My Sack. Carry on.

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

I hope the L.A.U.N.C.H mentees get a lot out of this program, but it’s unrealistic to believe that it will all happen right away. I do believe we are planting the seeds for fruit that has the power and durability to last a lifetime. That being said I think a fair goal is that they walk away from this program with added confidence and empathy for others. We are already seeing these things come to fruition and it’s truly a beautiful thing. I hope they will be able to better stand up for themselves, each other, and the values we have taught them in order to be beacons of light and strength in a sometimes scary and uncertain world.

What does being a mentor for LAUNCH mean to you?

Being a mentor means being a Captain's Mate, helping young men navigate the waters of becoming a man.

What part of your role do you find most fulfilling?

I find myself being drawn to the outsiders of the group. I keep an eye out for the young men that break away and want to be alone, but really just need someone present to listen and be with them in their world.

How long have you been with LAUNCH?

My first year, 2022.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

My Work is growth consulting, helping businesses with software and digital transformation. Fun is hiking, filming videos, playing drums, and kickboxing.

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

I hope the mentees learn that becoming a man is multi-dimensional. Hopefully they gain insight into how to manage their internal worlds and develop tools to ground themselves when the going gets tough. I feel like so much of our work as mentors is teaching proper self-care so they can focus when emotions are loud and the world is a confusing and scary place.

Sharing a space where I can be a positive male influence is the most fulfilling.

I’ve been with LfL since August.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

When I’m not mentoring: I’m grocery shopping, researching the stock market, visiting my folks, cleaning, and walking or jogging downtown.

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

I hope our young mentees influence their peers by utilizing the values the program teaches.

What about LAUNCH's mission and work inspires you?

I am a big believer that it “takes a village” – to drive meaningful change, to be successful in careers, and to raise children. While my own father left us when I was 2 and I spent many years without a male role model at home, my mom and grandmother were the queens of my village and made me who I am today. L.A.U.N.C.H. is part of that village that will help shape the futures of these young men.

What specific assets do you bring to LAUNCH as a Board Member?

I bring a mix of experiences that I hope will help L.A.U.N.C.H. deliver sustained impact on young men and their communities for many years. I have led large, global organizations for many years, have owned and operated small businesses, and have significant experience with well-developed philanthropic programs and their supporting technology and processes. I also hope to leverage a network of relationships to help with fundraising and sponsorship.

If LAUNCH were to be on the cover of your favorite magazine in 5 years time, what would the story be about?

The story would be about the young men we have impacted in the inaugural year and where they are now. I would expect each mentee has bottled up their experiences in the program and is continuing to pay it forward in their own ways.

What do you want to accomplish being on the LAUNCH Board this year?

I hope to: 1) drive more awareness and followership of L.A.U.N.C.H.; 2) establish a strong operating foundation particularly in fundraising and engagement; and 3) grow personally through watching the great work of mentees, mentors, volunteers, and fellow Board members.

What about LAUNCH's mission and work inspires you?

Success in life is born out of so many things. Here in the US, opportunity is there for all but at the same time, not everyone has the same ability to pursue that opportunity. By mentoring young men, we are helping bridge that gap.

What specific assets do you bring to LAUNCH as a Board Member?

My experience as a PTA Treasurer and financial analyst helps me tackle the less-visible aspect of running and maintaining a successful program, which is proper budgeting and financial discipline..

If LAUNCH were to be on the cover of your favorite magazine in 5 years time, what would the story be about?

Showcasing specific success stories.

What do you want to accomplish being on the LAUNCH Board this year?

Establishing a durable, sustainable financial foundation for the organization.

When Taylor saw a post in a neighborhood Facebook group back in 2021 about someone wanting to start a non-profit to support local young men who were in need of positive male role models, she immediately said yes. Now, as the President of L.A.U.N.C.H. for Life, she serves the young men L.A.U.N.C.H. and their families, as well as the community of mentors. Listen in as we chat through her decision to say yes, the long-term plans for the organization, and the places around Richmond that Taylor and her family love.

About Taylor Templin-Viele

Taylor Templin-Viele is the President of L.A.U.N.C.H for Life, a nationally-certified School Psychologist, and a zealous advocate for children and families. She has been an educator for more than 15 years. In her role as President, Taylor is honored to serve the young men of L.A.U.N.C.H and their families, as well as the community of mentors. As the co-developer of L.A.U.N.C.H's group mentorship program, she provides clinical oversight, leads the Board of Directors, and supports the exceptional effort of all organization committee chairs, members, and volunteers. When not attempting to solve the world's problems, Taylor can be found exploring Richmond with her husband and three children, wiggling her toes in the sand, and staying up too late reading a good book.

What about LAUNCH's mission and work inspires you?

Throughout my life, I’ve had the great fortune of being supported by some fantastic male role models, including my Dad, Peter, and brother, Paul. From a very early age, Dad showed me the impact of extending kindness and compassion to others. Helping others is something that drives me, and I see L.A.U.N.C.H as a powerful enabler to help young men in need to thrive. It’s been a privilege to work alongside L.A.U.N.C.H volunteers, mentors and mentees – I’m regularly impressed by the commitment and drive of our team.

What specific assets do you bring to LAUNCH as a Board Member?

Having lived and worked around the globe, I bring a different perspective to the L.A.U.N.C.H Board, which I consider keeps us creative, intentional, and accountable in delivering our Mission. I’ve developed and delivered training programs in Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia, and I use my skills to develop the events program for L.A.U.N.C.H to ensure that the events are connection-focused, fun and meaningful.

I’m also interested in benchmarking with similar organizations to L.A.U.N.C.H, and I’ve used my networks to connect with some other nonprofits in the UK and Australia. Amongst other things, understanding and learning from the journey of others working in this field helps us maintain best practice in building community trust and child safeguarding practices.

If LAUNCH were to be on the cover of your favorite magazine in 5 years time, what would the story be about?

In one of my recent conversations with a nonprofit in the UK called Lads Need Dads, Founder and Managing Director Sonia Shaliean commended LAUNCH’s focus on quality over quantity, and she joked, “you don’t know who you are raising in the program – one of the mentees could be the next President of the US!”. Now, 5 years probably isn’t quite long enough for one of our young men to be President (yet…!), but I do hope to read that the program has inspired participating young men to L.A.U.N.C.H into their lives realizing their own hopes and dreams in ways they didn’t think possible before joining us.

What do you want to accomplish being on the LAUNCH Board this year?

I’m energized to contribute to the design of the Graduate and Ambassadorship programs to add to the suite of our male-led group mentoring offerings. The opportunity for our young men to stay connected to L.A.U.N.C.H and participate in these additional programs is exciting to me.

In the next year, I’m also looking forward to working with L.A.U.N.C.H.’s President Taylor Viele to develop more in-house mentor supports and training as an important enhancement to our current practice.

Why do you volunteer for LAUNCH?

Watching these young men create friendships and bonds that have the potential to change their lives for the better is extremely rewarding. There are so many moving parts to make Launch’s mission come to fruition. I’d like to think that the photographs I take during the events will give these young men the opportunity to look back years from now on a pivotal point in their lives.

Describe a memorable moment you have observed at a LAUNCH event when volunteering.

On the last day of the Inaugural Camp, David announced that there was a special treat outside for everyone. The look on the young men’s’ faces when they found out it was an ice cream truck was priceless. Most of them were so excited they raced outside before David could finish his sentence. The entire time they waited in line; they couldn't contain their excitement.

What do you do when you're not volunteering for LAUNCH?

When I am not volunteering for L.A.U.N.C.H., I spend most of my time working, painting, or going to the movies (mainly for the popcorn).

What excites you about the next year for LAUNCH?

I’m excited to see the evolution of the young men and how this program has impacted them. I think I am most looking forward to seeing them become ambassadors for the next generation and continue the cycle of mentorship.

What about LAUNCH's mission and work inspires you?

LAUNCH's mission reinforces what I have learned from my time as a single mom. Children, especially young men, not only deserve but need positive male role models. As the primary custodial parent, I remember trying to fulfill both roles and then finally realizing that no matter how hard I tried, I would not be able to provide the same things a male role model can provide. I'm inspired by watching the relationships between the mentees and mentors grow over the past 7 months. Its incredible to see the connections that have formed and how excited everyone gets to see each other at the events.

What specific assets do you bring to LAUNCH as a Board Member?

I love people and I love developing relationships so I think I bring a sense of unity to the Board. I am also big on teamwork and collaboration and being on the Board is definitely something that requires both.

If LAUNCH were to be on the cover of your favorite magazine in 5 years time, what would the story be about?

It would be a 5 year reunion article from our inaugural year. All of our original mentees would still be involved with LAUNCH because our goal is to keep them as active members who have applied the values and lessons they have learned over the years. It would highlight all of our original mentees and their success stories and how mentorship helped pave the way for them to have successful futures.

What do you want to accomplish being on the LAUNCH Board this year?

I'd like to accomplish developing more community partnerships and overall community involvement with volunteers, mentees, and mentors. I would love to be a part of helping LAUNCH become more widespread throughout our area so we can continue to be a catalyst for change within our community.

What does being a mentor for LAUNCH mean to you?

I place a great deal of pride in myself that I can help others achieve their goals and reach their potential, especially when maybe they don't see the potential that I do.

What part of your role do you find most fulfilling?

I find it very rewarding each time I see these young men and they seem to light up when they see me, or when they are excited to share something with me. I want to be a dependable role model and support person for them, and it feels great when I sense that validation.

How long have you been with LAUNCH?

Since August of 2021.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

First and foremost, I am a husband and dad of three kids so I mentor them (whether they like it or not) and love exploring and learning new things with them. I also volunteer (or Grow) with Mustaches For Kids Richmond which raises money for local children's charities while having fun growing mustaches each November, and am also the Chair of the Budget Advisory Committee for Chesterfield Schools. Outside of volunteering, I am a Product Manager at Capital One where I work on solving problems for Finance by building software. And after all of that, I love hiking, building things, watching sports, and traveling.

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

I hope these young men gain confidence in themselves to be leaders and to embody the values that LAUNCH is trying to instill. I hope that they see the support system of mentors and mentees that they can rely upon for advice, to keep them accountable, and to celebrate their success with.

What does being a mentor for LAUNCH mean to you?

I have really enjoyed getting to know and spending quality time with all of the young men of LAUNCH's first class. And it's been a fun and rewarding experience to try and make a positive impact in their lives.

What part of your role do you find most fulfilling?

It has been great watching the young men not only embrace the values we are trying to teach but also to see them start to build their own friendships with each other... and what hopes to be the start of their own little community.

How long have you been with LAUNCH?

Since the initial LAUNCH kickoff camp back in August.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

I enjoy watching sports, exercising, spending time with family and traveling.

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

To have an understanding of the LAUNCH values, and that there are role models out there that they can lean on to help them become the best versions of themselves!

What does being a mentor for LAUNCH mean to you?

Being a mentor for LAUNCH is nothing short of amazing. Having the opportunity to work with these wonderful young gentlemen and help provide my experiences and guidance is one of the most fulfilling experiences I have done in my lifetime. There have been many times in which I could have used a helping hand and /or a shoulder to lean on growing up and having the chance to be that for someone else is amazing. The definition of mentor is ever changing and evolving depending on each situation. It is being a friend, a guide, a sounding board and role model. Sometimes all at once and sometimes each being independent of each other.

What part of your role do you find most fulfilling?

As mentioned above; the ability to help someone find themselves, work through a complicated situation or to just “be present” is one of the most fulfilling parts of mentorship. It is an absolute honor to be a part of these young men's lives and each engagement is rewarding in itself.

How long have you been with LAUNCH?

I have been with LAUNCH since Day one of our Camp in August.

What do you do when you're not mentoring for LAUNCH?

When not mentoring with LAUNCH, outside of work I enjoy working out, drawing, reading and spending time with my family.

What do you most hope LAUNCH mentees will get out of this year's program?

My hope for our LAUNCH mentees is they graduate with the confidence and skills to pay it forward. This program has the ability to instill a set of solid life skills that will set them up for success and the programs overall success will be measure by the outputs of each mentee back to their friends, family and society as whole.
